Kindness Is...

Today the Kinders learned all about kindness. We did the toothpaste experiment. Our helping hand squeezed out a bunch of toothpaste on a plate. We talked about how this is what happens when somebody says something rude. You can't take it back. Our helping hand tried to put the toothpaste back in the tube, but it was really hard! When we say something rude, it takes 10 "bucket filling" comments to get that person back to where they were before you said something rude! 

Then, we read the story: 

This is a great story about what it means to be kind! 

Then, without brainstorming any ideas, the Kinders went to their desks and drew a picture of what it means to be kind. These were the results:

Today we also celebrated Red Cross Day of Pink at school! Look at our school spirit! Great job, Kinders!

Positive Post-It Notes

This week our school is focusing on being kind to others. Today is Red Cross Day of Pink. To support this day, we are learning about kindness and making an effort to give our friends positive post-it notes! The Kinders are printing on post-it notes and sticking them to their friends' desks! 

Take a look below at the video we watched as a school on Monday in our assembly. A brave girl in Airdrie, AB, was bullied and posted positive post-it notes in her school as a response! She is the reason we are having positive post-it note week!

Two boys lost baby teeth

Two boys lost their baby teeth over February break! The places chosen were Australia and Russia!

The boy on the left chose Australia and the boy on the right chose Russia!

Our "Egg-speriment"

As you probably heard, yesterday we started our egg-speriment (experiment)! We took two hard-boiled eggs, passed them around to feel and touch, and then placed one egg in a container of coke and one egg in a container of water. 

We took some guesses about what would happen to the eggs overnight. 

For the egg in the coke, the Kinders' guesses were:

- The egg will turn black

- The egg will explode

- The egg will crack

- The egg will turn into a bouncy ball

For the egg in the water, the Kinders' guesses were:
- The egg will turn blue

- The egg will explode

- The egg will turn purple

- The shell will fall off

This was our worksheet we used to colour how the eggs looked before and after. 

The next morning...

The Kinders were VERY excited to see how the eggs looked. 

Look what happened to the egg that was in the coke all night!!!

We talked about what sugar can do to your teeth. We talked about how teeth and eggshells are similar. As stated on the MadSci Network, "Both teeth and eggshells are made of stone-like minerals containing mostly calcium." (Taken from here) 

This experiment shows us why we have to brush our teeth every morning and night, and especially after eating candy or sugary foods or drinks!

We talked about how to brush teeth. We had our "helping hand" of the day put some toothpaste on the toothbrush and try to brush the sugar off the egg. 

It's working!

Look how many sugar cubes are in a coke! When researching this, sources said anywhere between 10-14 sugar cubes are in a coke. WOW!

Look how clean our egg is getting!

Look what happens when we brush our teeth! The sugar comes off. 

We also talked about how sometimes brushing our teeth doesn't get EVERY SINGLE sugar bug off. This is why we have to visit the dentist a couple times a year; to have a hygienist clean our teeth with their special instruments!

To finish off our lesson, we watched a video on youtube about proper teeth brushing!
