We started by watching this video:
Then, we talked about what parts a plant has. It has: flower, stem, leaves and roots!
We talked about what each part does for the plant and we we need it.
1. We need the flower because it produces the fruit or creates a beautiful flower. The petals are for protecting the middle part of the flower and to help attract bees to pollinate the flower!
2. We need the stem because it acts like a straw for the flower. It sucks all the water and minerals up from the roots and passes the water throughout the plant.
3. We need the leaves to make food for our plant called photosynthesis. That's a very big word for Kindergarten! Plants make food using the sun!
3. We need the roots to anchor the plant into the ground. The roots also help to suck up the minerals and water to pass to the plant.

Next, we played a little game. I paused the video on the part where it showed the labelled plant. I chose a part (ex: stem) and the Kinders had to guess what part was the stem!
Next, the students were given a white sheet of paper where they had to draw me a plant and label the four parts of the plant. If we have time, we will be decorating our plant drawings with gems, popsicle sticks or ribbon!
